About Peter Von Perle
Peter Von Perle writes award-winning historical fiction rooted in factual research, bringing forgotten voices of the early Atlantic world to life through stories of survival, resistance, friendship, and human courage.
“Until the lion tells the story, the hunter will always be the hero.”
African Proverb
This proverb stands at the heart of my work. My novels look beyond kings, conquerors, and official histories to explore the lives of the Indigenous peoples, enslaved Africans, and witnesses who endured the birth of the modern Atlantic world.
Why I write These Stories
My work began with a question: what happens when history is told through the eyes of those who lived its consequences rather than those who claimed its victories?
Through fiction grounded in documented events, I explore the Caribbean pearl fisheries, Indigenous survival, African slavery, colonial violence, and the human relationships that formed in one of the most overlooked chapters of early American history.
These are not stories about conquest alone. They are stories about the people history nearly erased.

The Research Behind the Fiction
For more than a decade, I have studied the history of the Caribbean pearl fisheries, Columbus’s third voyage, Cubagua, Indigenous pearl divers, the early Atlantic slave trade, and the events that shaped the first decades of European colonization in the Americas.
Readers who wish to go deeper can explore the historical research, scientific studies, and primary-source context behind these novels through The Columbus Pearls project.
